Plan for a vigorous trek to the Yana Peak Summit. Along the way we encounter the stone basement of a pioneer homestead, complete with a hand dug well. On toward the center of the mountain we come upon an old road through the Buttes. Stone retaining walls, assembled by hand, still hold the roadbed in place. Further in we reach the geographic core of the Buttes. It is the old central lake bed of the Buttes volcano, which resembles a Herculean amphitheater. We then make our way to the Yana Peak Summit, to inspect the caves high over the canyon. Within their protective shelter we gaze out over the rugged terrain below.
